Joan Maurice moved to Deerfield Beach in 1991 and she passed away August 9th.

Avion Metal Works of Florida was founded in 1992 by Joan Maurice. She took a foundering wrought iron metal furniture company with 2 workers and a few hand tools and created the premier Florida decorative wrought iron and aluminum products company

Joan rolled up her sleeves both literally and figuratively and got going. She created the unique singular metal designs and custom finishes Avion is known for to this day.

She came from New York’s Madison Avenue, where she owned and operated a successful corporate video communications company and was an acclaimed educator in the New Jersey school system, being listed in the Who's Who of American Educators.

Joan’s discipline of listening, responding to, and fulfilling needs of others has served the residents of Deerfield Beach. She was an original member of the West Deerfield Community Alliance (WDCA) when a group of residents fought the installation of a cell phone tower in a west Deerfield Park. She was the President of the Waterford Home Owners Association and worked with City staff to have the wellfield building moved to an area that did not directly impact homes in the area and had landscaping installed in the area as this section is seen by the many people who use the area in daily commutes along the City.

Joan served on Code Enforcement when residents violated local codes came before a group of citizens who held the hearings and imposed fines when needed. She worked on the Ethics Committee which reported to the Deerfield Beach Commissioners.

She was a member of the Deerfield Cultural Committee and helped the annual art festival to what it is today and was involved when they held the Green Market in the Cove Shopping Center. Joan also served on the Housing Authority during the time when they hired Dr. Jarmon as it’s leader. Twice she served on the Firefighters Pension Board.

Joan spent countless hours on the Southwest 10th Street Community Oversight Advisory Committee (COAT) where a group of concerned residents from Deerfield and surrounding cities agreed on a number of important items on what should be done to the corridor between the Sawgrass Expressway and I95 which was presented to The Broward County Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Joan Maurice will be deeply missed by her friends and residents of Deerfield Beach.
